New Delhi: The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT), part of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, has warned the public about a USB charger scam, advising caution when using USB charging ports in public areas.
CERT said, “Cyber-criminals may use USB charging ports installed at public places like airports, cafés, hotels and bus stands for malicious activities. Charging your electronic device at such infected USB charging stations may make you a victim of juice-jacking cyber attack.”
“Juice jacking” involves installing malware on public charging stations, which can result in the installation of harmful apps, data theft, or ransomware attacks.
To avoid juice jacking, CERT has suggested being careful with public charging stations or portable chargers. They have recommended using electrical outlets and bringing personal cables and power banks, as well as locking devices, avoiding pairing with unknown devices, and ideally charging phones when turned off.
