New Delhi: The Centre has appointed Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi as the next Chief of Army Staff, taking charge from General Manoj C Pandey. Lt Gen Dwivedi is currently posted as the Vice Chief of Army Staff, and his new tenure will begin on the afternoon of June 30, 2024.
In an official notice, the Defence Ministry said, “The command appointments of Lt Gen Dwivedi include Command of Regiment (18 Jammu & Kashmir Rifles), Brigade (26 Sector Assam Rifles), DIG, Assam Rifles (East) and 9 Corps.” He has been rewarded with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), as well as three GOC-inC Commendation Cards.
Lt Gen Dwivedi was commissioned into the Indian Army’s Infantry (Jammu and Kashmir Rifles) on December 15, 1984. He then went on to serve in appointments, such as Command, Staff, Instructional, and Foreign. He served as the Director General of Infantry and General Officer Commanding in Chief (Headquarters Northern Command) from 2022 to 2024.
The new Chief of Army Staff has an M Phil in Defence & Management Studies, along with two Master’s Degrees in Strategic Studies in Military Science.
