New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Education (MoE) has announced that the University Grants Commission-National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) would be canceled.
The announcement comes just a day after over 9 lakh candidates took it in 317 cities, citing inputs from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs that “the integrity of the examination may have been compromised.” With this decision, UGC-NET, which is required for entry-level teaching jobs in Indian institutions as well as admission to PhD programs, becomes the first centrally administered public test to be discontinued since the Centre enacted a new anti-paper leak law.
According to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, the National Cybercrime Threat Analytics Unit found “prima-facie that the integrity of the examination may have been compromised.” There will be a fresh examination, for which separate information will be supplied. The ministry released a statement saying, “Matter being handed over to CBI for thorough investigation in the matter.”
