Bengaluru: TeamLease Degree, an apprenticeship program platform, has released a new study that shows how the Indian government’s plan to build 50 e-commerce export hubs across the country has changed things. India’s expanding e-commerce export hubs are expected to create approximately 2.25 lakh new jobs. The growth is anticipated to primarily impact logistics, warehousing, and customer support sectors, as the demand for e-commerce exports continues to rise.
The report underscores that many of these positions will be filled through apprenticeship programs, offering crucial entry-level roles in regions heavily involved in e-commerce exports. This surge in employment is poised to strengthen the digital commerce landscape in the country. E-commerce has already created 15-16 million jobs, including 3-4 million for women, expanding beyond entry-level roles to include marketing, merchandising, and management positions. The shift toward outsourcing HR and administrative functions highlights e-commerce’s broader impact on employment.
However, the logistics sector remains largely unorganized, with only 10% formal players and 4.5% skilled workers, creating challenges as demand for skilled labor rises. The government’s programs like NATS and Skill India are critical in addressing these gaps by providing hands-on training to prepare workers for advanced roles in the evolving logistics landscape.
