New Delhi: The Union Government has rolled out the Prime Minister Internship Scheme as part of its job-push agenda announced in the budget. Through this initiative, the centre aims to skill 10 million youth over five years, offering a 12-month exposure to real-world business environments and diverse professions. The pilot phase for the financial year 2025 is budgeted at Rs. 800 crore for providing 1,25,000 internships to the youth in the age group of 21 to 24.
According to sources from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA), the government’s reservation policy for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, and People with Disabilities will be applicable for this scheme.
The internship portal is being managed by the Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications and Geoinformatics (BISAG), a national agency of the Gujarat Government. Based on their average Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) spending, the government has invited India’s top 500 companies to take part in the scheme. Till now, the MCA has onboarded 111 companies from various sectors including agriculture and allied industries, automotive, and pharma. Companies such as Alembic Pharma, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Max Life Insurance have enrolled in the scheme.
Eligible candidates for this scheme must be Indian nationals, unemployed, and not in full-time education. The MCA will provide Rs. 6000 to the interns upon their joining. In addition, monthly assistance of Rs. 5000 will also be provided, with Rs. 4500 coming from the government and Rs. 500 from the company providing the internship.
