New Delhi: The government is working on a new broadcast policy to better regulate OTT platforms after complaints that current self-regulation guidelines aren’t being followed, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan said.
Speaking at an event in Chennai, Murugan explained that while OTT platforms classify content based on age and issue disclaimers, there have been concerns about the effectiveness of these measures. The government has released a draft of the new policy for public feedback before presenting it in Parliament.
Murugan also touched on the possibility of private FM radio stations being allowed to broadcast news, which is currently only done by All India Radio. He said the government is in talks with industry stakeholders about this change.
The event was part of an outreach program for the upcoming auction of private FM radio licenses. The auction will open up 730 channels in 234 cities, with a pre-bid meeting scheduled for October 28, 2024. The auction itself is expected to start in January 2025.
