IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation has partnered with the French university L’École Nationale de l’Aviation Civile (ENAC) to launch the first-ever Aviation Safety Management course in the Indian civil aviation industry. The program, supported by Airbus, is a two-year initiative aimed at addressing the rapidly growing need for aviation safety expertise in India.
This master’s course is designed for professionals within the air transport industry, equipping them with skills to assess, improve, and promote safety performance in various sectors of the aviation system. With India’s civil aviation market expanding rapidly, safety management has become a key concern, and this course seeks to fill the gap by offering advanced safety education tailored to the Indian market.
The course, which commences in January 2025, will be open to a maximum of 30 students in its first batch. The registration deadline is December 15, 2024. The program will take place over two years and include regular in-person sessions. During the first year, participants will attend one week of classes every two months, while in the second year, classes will take place one week per month. The course will also feature a six-month project or dissertation, allowing participants to apply what they have learned to real-world scenarios.
Notably, faculty from ENAC will travel from France to deliver lectures and provide hands-on training. The course is targeted at professionals, including senior and mid-level managers in aviation authorities and operators, ensuring they are well-prepared to address the unique safety challenges of the aviation sector.
Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “We are delighted to work with ENAC – a 70+ years organization focused on airline safety management and its related process. IIT Madras and ENAC have the same agenda of imparting education and skills and helping the community in general and the country as a whole. Our relationship will touch every passenger flying in and out of India and we are delighted to be part of such an initiative. There is a need for a consistent way of education and skilling as the volume of travel increases frequently and associated challenges to the safety of the industry. We strongly believe that our workforces leverage this program and equip themselves to help travellers.”
Dr. M.J. Shankar Raman, CEO of IITM Pravartak, highlighted the necessity of such a course, saying, “Civil Aviation is one of the fastest growing industries in the last two decades. Digitization has shrunk the world bringing in huge benefits for the travel industry. The Airline industry’s exponential growth comes with its own set of challenges. It is highly regulated and requires standards and consistency of rules/regulations along with robust and clean processes to assure safety to millions of passengers worldwide.”
“This course provided by ENAC and IITM Pravartak targets working professionals from the industry on safety management and has been exclusively brought to the Indian market. It will ensure all our travel is spot-free. There are numerous business units that work seamlessly with each other in the airline industry to give the best experiences to travellers. This course caters to all those business units with specific learnings, targets and goals to achieve,” he further added.
