New Delhi: Justice Sanjiv Khanna is set to become the 51st Chief Justice of India on November 11, following Justice D.Y. Chandrachud’s retirement a day prior. President Droupadi Murmu confirmed his appointment on Thursday under Article 124(2) of the Constitution. Justice Khanna’s term will be brief, ending with his retirement on March 13, 2025.

With nearly 20 years in Delhi’s legal circles, Justice Khanna has built a reputation for being reserved and focused. His journey began in 1983, primarily practicing in the Delhi High Court, where he later served as a judge starting in 2005. In 2019, he moved to the Supreme Court, making key contributions to major cases, including rulings on the Electoral Bond Scheme and Article 370.
Justice Khanna currently heads the National Legal Services Authority. His tenure as Chief Justice marks his first major administrative role, despite his extensive experience on the bench.
