New Delhi: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has achieved a significant milestone with its citizen-centric initiative, the Sanchar Saathi portal, which recorded over 8.5 crore visits since its launch in May 2023.
When the portal was launched, then Minister of Communications, Ashwini Vaishnaw clearly explained that the Sanchar Saathi portal is going to be a “citizen-centric” effort by the DoT to empower mobile users and improve their security. Additionally, the minister then stated that the focus has been empowering people by allowing them to view the mobile connections granted in their name, disconnect those that are no longer required, block or trace lost mobile phones, and check device authenticity when acquiring a new or old mobile phone.
Now, according to October 2024 data, the portal’s performance continues to gain momentum, attracting 57 lakh visitors in a single month—an average of nearly 2 lakh visitors daily. The website’s global rank improved dramatically, rising from 13,969 to 9,861 in the past three months, reflecting an impressive jump of 4,108 places.
Rising Global and Sectoral Relevance
In addition to the global ranking, Sanchar Saathi has also strengthened its position in the law and enforcement category, climbing 27 spots to secure the 48th position. This dual improvement highlights the platform’s growing relevance both globally and within its specific domain. With transparency and user-centric services at its core, the platform offers features that empower citizens to manage their mobile connections and address concerns effectively.
One of the standout modules of the portal, Know Your Mobile Connections (TAFCOP), has resolved over 1 crore requests, underscoring its efficiency and impact. By providing easy access to information about mobile connections linked to users’ IDs, the module plays a crucial role in helping citizens identify and manage potential misuse of their telecom resources.
Fighting Cyber Fraud with Public Engagement
The portal’s Chakshu module allows citizens to report suspicious communications, including fraudulent calls, SMS, and WhatsApp messages, in less than a minute. This streamlined process emphasizes DoT’s commitment to combating cyber fraud and financial crimes. Public participation in reporting fraud has been instrumental in bolstering cyber safety measures, with the portal serving as a critical tool in protecting individuals from scams.
The portal’s growing popularity can be attributed to DoT’s collaboration with Licensed Service Area (LSA) field units and telecom operators. This coordinated effort has enhanced the platform’s functionality, making it an essential resource for millions of users nationwide.
Transparency and Citizen Trust
The success of Sanchar Saathi highlights the importance of transparency and citizen engagement in government initiatives. By providing accessible dashboards and actionable insights, the platform not only ensures accountability but also fosters trust among its users.
DoT has called on citizens to continue leveraging the portal to report suspected fraud and assist in the fight against cybercrimes. “Your support matters,” the department emphasized, urging public participation to protect fellow citizens and strengthen India’s digital security ecosystem.
