Kolkata: The 8th edition of the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS), the flagship business summit of the state, is scheduled to be organized on 5-6 February in Kolkata. The King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren are expected to be among the representatives from 22 countries and most Indian states to attend the Summit.
While the Summit is expected to witness the signing of several MoUs, the highlight could be the West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee laying the foundation stones for 2 major projects worth Rs 2000 crore. From the sidelines of the BGBS, Banerjee will lay the foundation stones for both the Gangasagar Bridge as well as the Industry Bridge on the Damodar river.
The Gangasagar Bridge will incur expenses of Rs 1500 crore and will connect the mainland with the Sagar island. The 5 km long four-lane bridge will connect Kakdwip with Kachuberia. For this purpose, the West Bengal government is currently in the process of purchasing 12.97 acres of land—7.95 acres on the Kakdwip side and 5.01 acres on the Kachuberia side.
This Rs 1500 crore Gangasagar bridge which is expected to take 4 years will not only help the pilgrims (1.10 crore people attended this time) but also the residents of Sagar island. Currently with boats being the only recourse, the residents are dependent on tide and ebb and this is expected to provide succour.
The CM will also lay the foundation for the 640 m long three-lane Industry Bridge on the Damodar that will benefit residents of Bardhaman, Hooghly, Bankura, Purulia, East and West Medinipur and Jhargram. This will be an Extra Dose Cable Stead Bridge and will cost Rs 348 crore. It will come up beside the 50-year Agriculture Bridge on the Damodar which is currently in a derelict state.
