Jammu: In a significant move to boost the startup ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and the Jammu & Kashmir Entrepreneurship Development Institute (JKEDI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at fostering collaboration, mentorship, and financial support for startups in the region.
The signing took place at Jammu Kashmir Konnect, a startup-focused event held at JKEDI’s Bari Brahmana campus. The event brought together startups, incubators, and key stakeholders to discuss innovation and business growth opportunities.
Significance of the Partnership
The MoU aims to enhance branding, outreach, and accessibility to Startup India’s ecosystem, enabling mentorship, knowledge-sharing, and infrastructure support for local startups. It will also facilitate market linkages, funding networks, and international business expansion, aligning with India’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
Strategic Collaboration for Startup Growth
The MoU was formally signed by Director DPIIT Dr. Sumeet K Jarangal and Director JKEDI Rajinder Kumar Sharma, marking a major step toward strengthening startup support systems in J&K. During the program, one-on-one discussions were held between the DPIIT and JKEDI officials and leading incubators, addressing challenges, future strategies, and required policy interventions. The session provided a crucial platform for startups to voice their concerns and seek enhanced policy support.
Funding, Mentorship, and Policy Support
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Jarangal emphasized the need for DPIIT-recognized incubators to leverage Funds of Funds and Seed Funds. He highlighted that while financial resources are available, structured mentorship and handholding remain the most critical factors for startup success. He further assured that more interactive sessions will be conducted, encouraging entrepreneurs to shift their focus from job-seeking to job creation. Dr. Jarangal also spoke about India’s ambition to become a global leader in advanced technology sectors, reducing dependence on countries like Israel and the U.S.
Speaking on the occasion, Rajinder Kumar Sharma reiterated the JKEDI’s commitment as the nodal agency for Startup JK. He stated that JKEDI is actively collaborating with national and international organizations to strengthen J&K’s startup landscape.
