Agartala: The Government of Tripura has signed a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Digital India Bhashini Division (DIBD) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), marking a transformative step towards promoting regional languages and enhancing digital participation among its citizens.
The MoU was formalized during a state-level workshop titled “Bhashini Rajyam,” held at Pragna Bhavan in Agartala under the guidance of Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha.
The event, inaugurated by IT Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, witnessed the presence of key officials, including IT Secretary Kiran Gitte, DIBD CEO Amitabh Nag, and IT Director Jeya Ragul Geshan B.
The Bhashini initiative, a flagship program of the Digital India campaign, is designed to bridge digital and literacy gaps by enabling internet access and communication in 22 Indian languages.
Leveraging cutting-edge technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP), Bhashini offers real-time translation, speech-to-text, and text-to-speech capabilities, making digital platforms accessible across linguistic boundaries.
During the workshop, experts highlighted Bhashini’s potential to address language barriers, particularly in rural and tribal regions of Tripura, where the dominance of English and Hindi often limits citizens’ digital engagement.
By integrating Bhashini with governance tools such as the CM Helpline, Amar Sarkar app, eVidhan, and Kisan Sahayata App, the state government aims to enable multilingual communication, ensuring better accessibility to essential services.
In the education sector, Bhashini is poised to support learning in regional languages, while in law enforcement, it can facilitate technologies like voice-based data entry and multilingual FIR translations through the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS) platform.
Tripura is the first northeastern state and the eighth in the country to sign an MoU with Bhashini, positioning itself as a leader in digital inclusivity. This milestone not only emphasizes Tripura’s commitment to enhancing regional identity but also places it at the forefront of leveraging digital tools for equitable service delivery.
Speaking about the initiative, officials underscored the role of Bhashini in reducing costs associated with translations, fostering inclusivity, and addressing linguistic challenges in a diverse state like Tripura.
This collaboration aims to unify the state’s cultural and linguistic diversity while ensuring broader access to digital platforms in regional and local languages.
With this MoU, Tripura has set a benchmark for other states in utilizing technology to promote multilingualism and foster digital empowerment, paving the way for a more inclusive and connected future.
