New Delhi: OpenAI has introduced ‘Deep Research’ in ChatGPT, a new feature designed to conduct multi-step research on the internet, delivering structured reports based on various online sources. The tool is currently available to ChatGPT Pro users, with plans to expand access in the future.
How ‘Deep Research’ Works
Built for professionals in finance, science, and policy, the tool can also assist general users in researching topics such as product comparisons or travel planning. Unlike traditional search engines, Deep Research analyses multiple sources, interprets data, and consolidates findings into a detailed report.
The feature operates through a dedicated option in the ChatGPT message composer. Users can input queries, upload files, or provide additional context. The tool then initiates a research process, displaying a step-by-step breakdown of sources and methodologies. Depending on the complexity of the request, results can take between 5 to 30 minutes.
Limitations and Concerns
While Deep Research offers a structured approach to information gathering, OpenAI acknowledges potential accuracy issues. The tool may misinterpret data, take longer to generate responses, or struggle to distinguish credible sources from unreliable ones. The company plans updates to address these challenges over time.
Availability and Future Plans
Currently, the tool is limited to ChatGPT Pro users with a cap of 100 queries per month. OpenAI intends to roll it out to Plus and Team users next, followed by Enterprise customers. Availability in the UK, Switzerland, and the European Economic Area remains pending.
OpenAI is also working on a faster, more cost-effective version with higher query limits. Future updates will introduce visuals such as images and charts, and expand access to subscription-based research databases. The feature is available on the ChatGPT web app, with mobile and desktop integration planned soon.
