New Delhi: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) on 18 April dismissed reports suggesting a nationwide rollout of satellite-based tolling from 1 May.
The ministry clarified that no such decision has been taken to replace the existing FASTag system.
Clarification Issued on Satellite Tolling Claims
In an official statement, MoRTH addressed media reports claiming the imminent launch of a satellite-based toll system. The ministry said: “Some sections of the media have reported that a Satellite-based Tolling System will be launched on 1 May and will replace the existing FASTag-based toll collection system. This is to clarify that no such decision has been taken by the Ministry or NHAI.”
This clarification comes amid growing public and industry interest in India’s move towards automated tolling infrastructure. However, the current system using FASTags will continue for now.
Pilot Project for Barrier-Free Tolling Announced
While rejecting the satellite-based tolling claims, the Ministry announced a pilot initiative at selected toll plazas. The new system will integrate Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology with the existing FASTag infrastructure to enable barrierless toll collection.
The ANPR-FASTag-based model aims to eliminate toll plaza bottlenecks by allowing vehicles to pass without stopping. High-resolution ANPR cameras will read vehicle number plates, while RFID-enabled FASTags will handle the toll deduction process.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
MoRTH also highlighted that non-compliance with the upgraded tolling system could invite strict action. Violators may receive e-notices, and persistent non-payment could lead to FASTag suspension and other penalties under VAHAN provisions.
