Karnisar: State-run NHPC Ltd has started partial commercial operations at its 300 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) project in Karnisar, Bikaner, Rajasthan, marking a shift towards diversifying beyond its traditional hydropower base.
The company notified the stock exchanges that 107.14 MW of the total planned capacity began commercial operations on 12 April, following successful trial runs on 10 April.
The remaining capacity is expected to be brought online in phases, with NHPC set to announce the commissioning dates soon.
Solar Project to Support Regional and Clean Energy Goals
The Karnisar solar project is part of NHPC’s ongoing effort to expand its renewable energy portfolio, aligning with India’s national clean energy targets.
The project is expected to contribute to reducing carbon emissions and supporting the Bikaner region’s economic development by providing a steady supply of clean energy and infrastructure-related employment.
While hydropower continues to dominate NHPC’s portfolio, the gradual integration of solar assets signals the PSU’s broader strategic alignment with India’s energy transition goals. NHPC had earlier announced plans to develop over 10 GW of renewable capacity by 2030.
Parbati-II Project Nears Completion
In a related development, NHPC has completed trial runs of Unit #4 of its 800 MW Parbati-II hydroelectric project (4×200 MW) in Himachal Pradesh. The trial for Unit #4 was concluded on 13 April.
All three units have already been declared commercially operational from 1 April. With the latest test completed, the entire project has now undergone trial runs, and NHPC is expected to declare full commercial operations shortly.
The Parbati-II project is designed to supply power to northern grid states and strengthen regional energy stability, particularly during peak demand seasons.
