Mumbai: The Indian Railways will soon deploy Kavach 5.0, an advanced train protection system, on Mumbai’s suburban rail network to address safety and congestion challenges.
Adapted Signalling Tech for Mumbai’s Needs
Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, during a joint press conference with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, announced that Kavach 5.0 has been customised for the operational demands of Mumbai’s high-density suburban corridors.
The upgraded automatic train protection system is expected to reduce inter-train headway, allowing more trains to run on the same line while maintaining safety protocols.
Kavach, originally introduced to enhance railway safety across India, has undergone several upgrades. Version 5.0 is now being tailored specifically for high-frequency networks such as Mumbai’s, where peak-hour congestion affects over 7.5 million daily commuters.
Focus on Infrastructure and Passenger Movement
The minister also highlighted that infrastructure development remains central to enhancing suburban rail services. Currently, projects worth nearly Rs 17,000 crore are underway across Maharashtra, covering over 300 kilometres of new railway lines. These are aimed at decongesting existing routes and improving train frequency.
Among the major projects is the doubling of the Gondia-Ballarshah railway line. The 240-km corridor is being upgraded at an estimated cost of Rs 4,819 crore. According to the Ministry of Railways, this project will ease congestion in the Vidarbha and Marathwada regions and improve connectivity with neighbouring states like Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, aiding both passenger movement and freight operations.
Addition of AC Trains for Suburban Routes
As part of commuter-centric upgrades, the ministry has also announced the phased introduction of 238 air-conditioned suburban trains. These are designed based on Mumbai’s unique travel requirements and are aimed at offering consistent comfort during peak travel hours.
