Kolkata: The West Bengal State School Department has undertaken a special initiative for Aadhaar enrollment and the mandatory biometric update of students aged between five and 15.
At the request of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the drive will be starting from the South 24 Parganas and South Dinajpur districts in the first week of April.
Subsequently, it will take place in other districts during the last week of April and the first week of May. More than 300 Aadhaar Enrolment Kendras (AEKs) are functional across the districts currently, where school teachers and officials are involved in the enrolment process.
The immediate target group includes over 16 lakh students who are yet to be covered. Otherwise, they might miss out on the benefits of social schemes like Kanyashree and Taruner Swapna, where money is transferred directly to the bank.
The Aadhaar enrolment is mandatory both for availing the social schemes as well as for appearing in entrance tests. In 2024, over 13 lakh students were yet to be covered, which has gone up to 16.6 lakhs now following the onset of the new academic session.
