Darjeeling: A total of 31 MPs from across that country are scheduled to visit the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (toy train) for a study tour in the third week of April.
The touring MPs will engage in an informal discussion with the Northeast Frontier Railway General Manager and IRCON Chairman & Managing Director (CMD)Â on 17 April.
The primary focus of the discussion will center around the expansion of the railway network in the Northeast and Union Territories. Particular emphasis will be given to the Sivok-Rangpo Railway Line project.
In addition, there will be discussions around the promotion of railway-based tourism. This is particularly pertinent as the 124-year-old Darjeeling Himalayan Railway service is not just a UNESCO heritage site but is immensely popular with tourists.
The DHR functions under the Northeast Frontier Railway and was conferred UNESCO heritage status in 1999.
It was the first mountain railway in India to receive this award, which highlighted the technical excellence of its glorious services. The study tour MPs will assess which of these best practices could be replicated in other mountain railway services in the constituencies.
