Meerut: The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has started final trial runs of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) trains on a crucial 17km stretch in Meerut, between Shatabdi Nagar and Modipuram. This development marks a significant step toward making the full 82km Delhi–Meerut corridor operational by June 2025.
According to officials, this is the first time the entire corridor is witnessing simultaneous trial operations for both passenger and technical assessments. The RRTS corridor aims to connect Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Meerut via high-speed regional trains. Currently, 55km of the 82km route is functional, covering multiple stations in Delhi, Ghaziabad, and part of Meerut.
“The trial run on the Shatabdi Nagar–Modipuram stretch has commenced. This is part of the last phase of testing before seeking safety approvals,” said Puneet Vats, Chief Public Relations Officer, NCRTC.
A separate trial run is ongoing in Delhi between New Ashok Nagar and Sarai Kale Khan. Both sections must pass final approvals before the full corridor becomes operational.
The Meerut section spans 23km and includes 13 stations. Of these, four will serve high-speed RRTS trains- Meerut (South), Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram. The remaining nine stations will be served by a local Metro system, which uses the same tracks but operates shorter three-coach trains for intra-city connectivity.
Since February 2024, six-coach RRTS trains and three-coach Metro trains have undergone trials on the 6km segment between Meerut (South) and Shatabdi Nagar. Full trial runs for RRTS trains have now extended up to Modipuram, while Metro trials are ongoing between Meerut (South) and Meerut (Central).
“We are evaluating shared operations, but the priority is to open the Delhi and Meerut trial sections by June,” an official added.
