Mumbai: Uno Minda, a leading automotive components company, has announced a significant investment of Rs. 210 crore in a new aluminum die-casting facility in Sambhaji Nagar (Aurangabad), Maharashtra. The greenfield project is planned to meet the rising demand for electric vehicles (EVs), particularly electric two-wheelers (e-2Ws) and electric four-wheelers (e-4Ws), in India.
Phased Expansion
The investment will be rolled out in phases over the next five years, funded through a balanced combination of internal accruals and debt. According to Uno Minda, Phase 1 of the plant is expected to begin commercial operations by the second quarter of FY27, adding 3,629 metric tons per annum to the company’s casting component capacity. This move is aligned with Uno Minda’s broader strategy of enhancing its backward integration capabilities, particularly for its upcoming four-wheeler EV powertrain plant.Â
Critical Role of Die Casting in EVs
With the global automotive sector transitioning towards electric mobility, the demand for lightweight and high-performance materials has increased dramatically. Aluminum die casting plays a pivotal role in this shift, providing essential components for thermal management, structural support, and powertrain efficiency in EVs—requirements that are significantly greater than in traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.
Uno Minda’s upcoming facility is expected to cater directly to this demand, strengthening its position in the EV component manufacturing ecosystem.
Localisation of ManufacturingÂ
The planned investment aims to reinforce the significance of domestic manufacturing, localisation, and technological innovation. By building advanced casting capacity within India, Uno Minda aims to enhance self-reliance and maintain a competitive edge in a rapidly evolving market.
