New Delhi: In a significant step toward enhancing regional connectivity and economic development, the Government of Bihar has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for the development of six new regional airports across the state.
The MoU was signed at Bihar Niwas in New Delhi in the presence of Chief Secretary Amrit Lal Meena and Resident Commissioner Kundan Kumar.
Six Airports, Rs 150 Crore Investment
The six new airports will be developed at Madhubani, Birpur (Supaul), Munger, Valmikinagar (West Champaran), Muzaffarpur, and Saharsa. The state government has allocated Rs 150 crore for the first phase, with Rs 25 crore earmarked per airport.
The airports are planned to support 19-seater aircraft, aimed at connecting remote regions and stimulating local development. This initiative is aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Viksit Bharat by 2047’ vision and the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, which promotes affordable air travel to underserved areas.
Boost to Tourism, Jobs, and Logistics
The new regional airports are expected to boost tourism in culturally and ecologically rich regions such as Valmikinagar and Madhubani. They are also anticipated to spur job creation and improve logistical access for small industries and businesses.
With the central government planning 50 new airports over the next five years, Bihar is emerging as a priority state in India’s regional aviation push.
