Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation will distribute digital vending certificates to all street hawkers in the city vending on footpaths.
The certificates will be issued by KMC from 16 August. In the first phase, 8727 hawkers will be provided with this digital certificate.
All these include Hawkeye, who have registered themselves in the 2015 as well as the recent surveys. They are all hawking as per the rules in their designated places only.
Last year’s KMC survey registered 54,178 hawkers. In the first phase, 14,000 were shortlisted and 8727 following all rules are being handed out the digital certificates.
This was decided by the Town Vending Committee of the KMC on 24 July. Each card will cost Rs 800 annually and can be renewed every year with that payment.
Each card will be fully digital with a QR code, which will provide detailed information about the particular hawker.
According to KMC, this digital certificate will help identify alleged cases of leasing out or outright selling the stall to someone else.
Therefore, this will help not only illegal encroachments but also actions can be taken against irregularities.
This digital certificate will help hawkers take loans from banks and make them more self-reliant.
