Bengaluru: Water treatment firm VA Tech Wabag Ltd (WABAG) has secured a Rs 380 crore contract from the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to build energy-efficient water reuse facilities in Bengaluru.Â
The project, funded by the World Bank, follows the design-build-operate (DBO) model.
As part of the agreement, WABAG will design, engineer, construct, and commission advanced wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) with tertiary treatment capabilities. These facilities will be developed at four sites in Bommanahalli under the Karnataka Water Security and Disaster Resilience Programme.
The project scope also includes building biogas generation units, solar sludge drying beds, intermediate pumping stations, and associated infrastructure. Once construction is completed in 30 months, WABAG will operate and maintain the facilities for 10 years, ensuring long-term performance and sustainability.
The treated water will be reused by industries, helping to cut down on freshwater use and boost the city’s water security. The plants will also use anaerobic digestion of sludge to generate biogas, which will help power operations and reduce the need for external energy.
This initiative reflects BWSSB’s focus on sustainable urban water management and environmentally responsible infrastructure, supporting Bengaluru’s goal of becoming more water-resilient.
