Kolkata: The peak power demand during Durga Puja in Kolkata (in the CESC area) is expected to reach 12,050 MW on Tritiya.
This marks a significant 22 per cent increase from last year’s puja peak demand of 9,912 MW recorded on Chaturthi.
Overall across West Bengal, the power consumption has grown by 542 per cent in 14 years (excluding CESC area, including Kolkata and parts of adjoining districts).
The number of Puja pandals seeking temporary power connection has grown by 141 per cent in 14 years since 2011, according to Power Minister Aroop Biswas.
In 2011, a total of 20,970 puja pandals applied to the state electricity board for temporary power connections. The total load was 210 MW.
In 2024, the figure shot up to 50,550 connections seeking a total load of 1348 MW. The load is expected to further rise this year.
Biswas assured that both the state electricity board and CESC were prepared to handle the power supply requirements and emergencies during festivals.
A total of 73,414 state electricity board personnel and 6000 CESC officials will man control rooms 24×7 to handle any exigency. There will be 3700 mobile vans that will rush to address daily power-related problems.
A special control room will operate 24×7 during Puja. This control room will serve as a central hun for monitoring and managing power distribution, ensuring that any disruptions are swiftly addressed.
