Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh government has introduced an online attendance system for students and teachers in government schools to improve transparency and strengthen monitoring in the education sector. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced the initiative at a function in Shimla, where he also handed appointment letters to 312 newly recruited art teachers, who will be covered under the Old Pension Scheme.
The online platform will enable real-time tracking of attendance, allowing education authorities to monitor school operations more effectively. Alongside the launch, the state government released a baseline evaluation report to assess school performance and unveiled a student-focused news platform for education-related updates.
Sukhu said the government is considering proposals to defer retirements in general, technical, and medical education departments until the end of academic sessions to maintain teaching continuity. Plans for biannual promotions for teachers are also under review.
Education Minister Rohit Thakur stated that the state has recorded steady progress in improving educational quality, supported by reform-oriented initiatives. One of the appointees, Kesra Kumari, said the appointment marked the end of a prolonged recruitment process delayed by administrative and legal hurdles.
The online attendance system is part of Himachal Pradesh’s broader digital governance push, aimed at increasing accountability, improving school performance monitoring, and addressing operational gaps in public education.
