Lucknow: The Bihar government has announced the appointment of IAS Pratyaya Amrit as the new Chief Secretary of the state, ahead of the Assembly elections.Â
He will succeed IAS Amrit Lal Meena (1989 batch), who will retire on August 31, 2025. Until then, Amrit has been designated as the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Chief Secretary’s office. He will formally assume charge as the new chief secretary on September 1, 2025.
Amrit is a 1991 batch officer. Before this appointment, he served as the Development Commissioner and also held the additional charge of the Additional Chief Secretary of the Health and Disaster Management Departments.Â
Amrit, a native of Muzaffarpur, has held key administrative roles across Bihar, including as District Magistrate in Katihar and Saran. Known for his hands-on approach early in his career, he led several grassroots reforms. As Sub-Divisional Magistrate in Simdega (then in Bihar, now in Jharkhand), he tackled illegal gambling in tribal areas.Â
His standout achievement came in 2011 when he became the only IAS officer in the country to receive the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration in the individual category. He earned the honor for reviving the Bihar State Bridge Construction Corporation, turning it from a struggling organization into a profitable and efficient one.
As the Chief Secretary, Amrit is expected to bring stability and transparency to Bihar’s administration and ensure that the government machinery functions smoothly.
