Gangtok: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has instructed telecom service providers operating in Sikkim to make Nepali a mandatory part of all customer-related communication.
In a recent notification, the DoT directed operators to include the language across interactive voice response systems (IVRS), SMS, call centre support, and other communication channels used for subscriber interaction. Telecom companies have been given a 30-day timeline to comply with the directive.
The order has been issued to all Unified License (UL) and Virtual Network Operator (VNO) holders, along with internet service providers (ISPs) functioning in the state.
Officials noted that the move is aimed at improving accessibility and convenience for consumers by ensuring essential information is available in Nepali, which is both widely spoken and officially recognised in Sikkim.
