Indore: Indore has become the first city in Madhya Pradesh to secure the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Green City Platinum Certification, placing it among only three cities in the country to receive the recognition. The other certified cities include Rajkot Smart City Development Limited, Pune Municipal Corporation and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. The certification followed a six-month-long evaluation of data submitted by the city administration on over a dozen parameters, covering aspects such as master planning, water and energy conservation, solid waste management, e-governance, green cover and policy interventions.
The recognition was awarded to Indore Smart City Development Limited (ISCDL) and Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) on Monday. The certificate was presented to Indore Collector Asheesh Singh and IMC Commissioner Shivam Varma by Sunil Chordia, Chairman of CII’s National Committee on MSME. According to Singh, Indore is the second city in India to achieve platinum certification and has scored better than Pune on several parameters, particularly in areas of cleanliness, air quality, water management, waste disposal and e-governance.
With this certification, Indore joins an exclusive group of 32 cities and zones in India that have been recognised by IGBC for advancing sustainable and environmentally responsible urban development. The achievement underscores the growing role of mid-sized Indian cities in adopting green practices to meet rising challenges of urbanisation and resource management. Indore’s recognition is expected to place greater focus on how urban policies can align with sustainability benchmarks in the years ahead.
