New Delhi: India’s Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, IFS, held a high-level virtual meeting with Intel CEO Lip Bu Tan to discuss the semiconductor giant’s prospective expansion in India.
With a focus on cooperation in the semiconductor and artificial intelligence (AI) industries, the conversation revolved around Intel’s “initiatives and plans for India operations.” The interaction is a reflection of the government’s growing efforts to draw in foreign technology investments through the IndiaAI and India Semiconductor Mission initiatives.
Confirming the meeting on X, Ambassador Kwatra wrote: “Had the pleasure to interact with Mr Lip Bu Tan, CEO of INTEL to discuss INTEL’s initiatives and plans for India operations in coordination with the Government’s goal to develop semiconductor and AI industry in India under the aegis of India Semiconductor Mission and India AI Mission.”

The discussion takes place ahead of India’s next India-AI Impact Summit 2026, which is set for February 19-20 in New Delhi. India will be at the forefront of the global conversation on inclusive and responsible AI development as the Global South hosts the first global-scale AI summit.
The discussions between Tan and Kwatra also point to the increasing possibility of significant investments in India’s technology infrastructure, including the possible construction of an Intel fabrication facility.
India’s aspirations in the semiconductor industry would reach a significant milestone if this development materialised, and it would further solidify its place in the global chip manufacturing and AI innovation ecosystem.
