Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh Central Power Distribution Company Limited (MPCZ) has accelerated its smart metering drive, installing over 4.56 lakh smart meters across 16 districts in the Bhopal, Narmadapuram, Gwalior, and Chambal divisions. The initiative is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to modernize its electricity distribution network and improve billing transparency.
Bhopal leads the rollout with more than 2.52 lakh smart meters deployed, marking the highest installation within the central zone. Although the pace lags behind the eastern and western discoms, officials said implementation has gained traction in recent months. The shift towards smart metering aims to address long-standing inefficiencies in manual billing and curb power losses caused by human error and unauthorized connections.
According to discom officials, smart meters are helping consumers track their real-time power usage and pay only for what they consume, reducing billing disputes. The introduction of time-based tariffs has also started showing results, with a 20% rebate offered on electricity used during daytime hours between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The change, reflected in recent October bills, is part of a broader effort to encourage load balancing and promote energy efficiency.
Officials said dedicated teams are working to meet the installation targets set under the central government’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). While challenges persist in rural connectivity and consumer awareness, the initiative marks a key step toward data-driven energy governance and improved service reliability in Madhya Pradesh’s power sector.
