New Delhi: The government has enabled Passport Verification Records (PVR) on DigiLocker, marking a key update to how citizens access and share official verification documents. The National e-Governance Division (NeGD) under the Ministry of Electronics and IT, in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs, introduced the feature to support ongoing efforts to digitise essential public services.
The move allows citizens to retrieve their PVR digitally once their details are verified, making the document available in the “Issued Documents” section of DigiLocker. Officials expect the integration to reduce reliance on physical copies and simplify verification processes across sectors that require passport-related documentation, including travel, employment, and compliance checks. By offering secure, government-issued digital records, the system is designed to limit errors linked to manual submissions and reduce turnaround times for institutions that rely on identity verification.
The PVR is issued directly from authorised government systems, ensuring the digital version maintains the same authenticity as the physical document while minimising risks of tampering. Citizens will also be able to share the file digitally with institutions that request it, giving consent-based access without depending on attested photocopies or repeated document submissions.
The update supports ongoing efforts to shift high-volume documentation processes to digital platforms, a core objective under the Digital India programme. Officials note that such integrations not only improve service efficiency but also help departments reduce paperwork and administrative load.
By bringing PVRs onto DigiLocker, the government aims to strengthen digital public infrastructure while addressing long-standing gaps in document accessibility and verification. The feature is expected to benefit millions of passport applicants and holders as more services move toward paperless workflows in the coming years.
