Mumbai: IDE Technologies has secured an engineering, procurement, and construction contract from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to build a major seawater reverse-osmosis desalination plant at Manori on Mumbai’s west coast.
The project will supply 200 million litres of potable water per day in its first phase. It aims to support the city’s growing demand for reliable freshwater.
The agreement is not limited to construction. IDE will also operate and maintain the plant for 20 years after it starts running. The long-term arrangement is intended to ensure stable delivery of drinking water and smooth plant performance over time.
The plant design allows for future expansion. The intake and storage systems are sized to handle up to 400 million litres a day. This means capacity can double later without major new construction or disruption to the surrounding area.
IDE will work with GVPR Engineers, a local partner, during development. Seawater will be drawn from an offshore location a few kilometres away to reduce environmental impact and avoid shoreline disturbances.
IDE says the project will improve water security in Mumbai by adding a climate-resilient source to the city’s supply mix. The Manori plant is expected to play a key role as rainfall patterns become less predictable.
