New Delhi: In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of democratising technology, the Centre is promoting the use of artificial intelligence to address real-world challenges and enhance public welfare across various sectors.
The country has adopted a balanced and practical techno-legal approach to AI regulation, shaped through global study and wide stakeholder consultations, said Minister of State for IT Jitin Prasada.
Rather than relying solely on legislation, India is combining legal safeguards with technological solutions. The government is supporting research at premier institutions, including IITs, to develop tools for deepfake detection, privacy protection and cybersecurity.
This approach reflects the view that effective AI governance must be supported by technical innovation while safeguarding citizen rights.
The India AI Governance Guidelines, released on 5 November, provide a national framework for safe, responsible and inclusive AI development. The guidelines follow a risk-based and evidence-led approach, restrict unchecked use of high-risk AI systems, and rely on existing laws and sectoral regulators for oversight.
