Aizawl: Mizoram Governor Gen Vijay Kumar Singh (retd) has said that the newly developed Sairang railway line is slated for integration with the ambitious Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP) in Myanmar, further boosting regional connectivity and trade opportunities for the state.
The Governor highlighted that the 51.38-km Bairabi–Sairang railway line, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Aizawl on 13 September, is poised to be a “game-changer” for Mizoram. The line marks a historic milestone by providing the first-ever rail link to the state capital region, ensuring full integration of Mizoram into India’s national railway network.
The engineering marvel includes 45 tunnels, 143 bridges and four new stations — Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang and Sairang — showcasing the complex terrain and infrastructural challenges navigated during construction, according to an official from Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR).
Mizoram now joins Assam, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh as the fourth Northeastern state with rail connectivity close to its capital. Parallel efforts are underway to extend railway lines to Imphal in Manipur and Kohima in Nagaland, expanding connectivity across the region.
The Governor also recalled that the proposed 223-km Sairang–Hmawngbuchhuah railway extension — crucial for linking to the Kaladan project and enhancing access to Myanmar’s Sittwe port — had earlier been shelved due to concerns of economic non-viability. Mizoram leaders, including Members of Parliament, have since lobbied for its revival through multiple engagements with NFR officials in Guwahati and New Delhi.
With renewed focus on improving border infrastructure and boosting strategic connectivity, the integration of the Sairang line with KMMTTP is expected to unlock new economic corridors and strengthen India’s Act East policy.
