Lucknow: In a major step to strengthen rural education, the Uttar Pradesh government has launched digital libraries in 11,350 Gram Panchayats across the state.
The initiative aims to provide village students free access to modern learning resources and help them prepare for UPSC and other competitive examinations without moving to cities.
Key features of the Digital Libraries
Each digital library is being developed for Rs 4 lakh. Of this, Rs 2 lakh is earmarked for competitive and academic books, Rs 1.30 lakh for computers, high-speed internet, and IT equipment, and Rs 70,000 for modern furniture and seating arrangements. These centers are being designed as digital education hubs that combine traditional reading spaces with advanced technology.
Students will have access to e-books, online video lectures, audio content, quizzes, and more than 20,000 digital learning resources. The libraries aim to bridge the gap between rural and urban education by offering quality study material within villages.
Phase-wise launch
The project is being rolled out in phases. The first phase has already been completed in 35 districts, including Lucknow, Prayagraj, Ghazipur, Muzaffarnagar, Amroha, Azamgarh, Ballia, Bareilly, Bijnor, Fatehpur, and Kanpur Dehat.
Day-to-day operations will be handled by Gram Pradhans and Panchayat Secretaries, while a committee of administrative officers will monitor usage and performance. Director of Panchayati Raj Amit Kumar Singh said the initiative will help rural youth gain digital skills and compete on equal footing with urban students.
Expected outcomes
The project is expected to reduce educational migration, improve employment readiness, and support the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 by promoting inclusive development and nation-building from the grassroots.
