Hyderabad: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Hyderabad, in collaboration with the Institute for Lung Health, Germany, launched India’s first Bioengineering Centre of Excellence for Lung Health.
The initiative aims to address the rising national and global demand for advanced research in lung health through an interdisciplinary and international approach.
Focus of the Project
According to IIT Hyderabad, the centre will focus on research at the intersection of bioengineering and clinical medicine, backed by a strong Indo-German partnership. The centre is jointly led by Renu John of IIT Hyderabad and Soni Savai Pullamsetti from the Institute for Lung Health, Germany, who will serve as its directors.
Envisioned as a global hub for collaboration, the ILH IITH Bioengineering Centre of Excellence will promote interdisciplinary research, innovation, and talent development in lung health. The initiative is expected to strengthen scientific cooperation between India and Germany in the fields of biomedical science and engineering.
Significance of the Project
The collaboration brings together engineering expertise and clinical science to develop non-invasive diagnostic tools, advanced therapeutic solutions, and training programs for the next generation of lung health researchers. According to the institutions, accurate assessment of pulmonary and cardiac function continues to be a major challenge due to the limitations of existing technologies. The new centre aims to bridge these gaps by developing novel non-invasive methods for lung function assessment, disease modelling, and personalised therapies. Such advances could significantly improve the early diagnosis and treatment of respiratory diseases.
Inauguration of the Centre
The centre was formally inaugurated by IIT Hyderabad Director B S Murty. Speakers at the event included AIG Hospitals Chairman Dr D Nageshwar Reddy and Werner Seeger, Director of the Institute for Lung Health and Chairman of the German Center for Lung Diseases, Germany.
