Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on 18 January, laid the foundation stone for the Kaziranga elevated corridor, flagged off two Amrit Bharat Express trains and addressed a public rally on the second day of his visit to Assam.
Earlier, Modi said he was looking forward to the “Bhoomi Poojan” of key development projects at Kaliabor in Nagaon district, including the 35-km elevated corridor passing through the Kaziranga region.
In a post on X, Modi said the corridor would play a crucial role in safeguarding wildlife, especially during the monsoon season.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the project as a landmark initiative that would protect animals while strengthening connectivity. “The Bhoomi Poojan and flagging off of Amrit Bharat trains will further accelerate Assam’s development journey,” he said, thanking Modi on behalf of the people of the state.
The Rs 6,957-crore project aims to ensure safe wildlife movement across Kaziranga National Park, reduce accidents on NH-715, and support ecotourism and local employment. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs had approved the widening of the 86.67-km highway stretch to four lanes, along with a 34.5-km elevated corridor for animal crossings to the Karbi Anglong hills.
The Prime Minister will also virtually flag off Dibrugarh–Gomti Nagar and Kamakhya–Rohtak Amrit Bharat Express trains before departing for West Bengal later in the day.
