New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Railways has approved two important rail infrastructure projects in Western Railway and Eastern Railway.
These projects, worth Rs. 647.58 crore, aim to enhance connectivity, ease congestion, and improve operational efficiency.Â
The projects include:
- Construction of a Rail Over Rail (RoR) flyover at Kosamba for connectivity to the Kosamba–Umrapada Gauge Conversion section in GujaratÂ
- Development of a new rail bypass at Bhagalpur in Bihar.Â
Significance of the Kosamba Project
The project will connect the Kosamba–Umrapada railway section, which is about 9.2 km long, at a cost of Rs. 344.38 crore. This section is being upgraded to a broader railway gauge and is located near the Mumbai–Vadodara main line.
Because a Dedicated Freight Corridor passes through this area, the new line cannot be connected to the main line at ground level. To solve this, a Rail Over Rail flyover will be built.
This flyover will allow trains to move smoothly without crossing tracks at the same level. It will make train travel safer, avoid delays, and help the upgraded railway section work properly with the main line.
Significance of the Bhagalpur Project
The project aims to build a 13.38 km railway bypass around Bhagalpur at a cost of about Rs. 303.20 crore. This new line will connect Gonudham Halt to Sabour, so trains can avoid passing through Bhagalpur Junction. Right now, the existing route is overused and very crowded, running at more than full capacity.
Trains also have to stop at Bhagalpur and reverse their engines to continue their journey, which causes delays. The new bypass will reduce congestion, remove the need for engine reversal, and help trains run more smoothly and on time.
Once completed, the infrastructure developed under these projects will strengthen rail connectivity in Gujarat and Bihar, enhance safety, reduce congestion, and improve the overall efficiency of train operations.
