Varanasi: The Inland Waterways Authority of India has proposed a Regional Centre of Excellence in Ramnagar, Varanasi, aimed at strengthening training and skill development in the inland water transport sector.Â
The project, estimated to cost around Rs. 200 crore, is expected to play an important role in turning the city into a major hub for waterways-based trade and logistics.
The proposed institute will have the capacity to train more than 5,000 students at a time. It will provide specialised training for boatmen, port staff, and other workers associated with the waterways sector. Officials said the facility will include modern infrastructure such as navigation simulators and training modules focused on vessel operations and river navigation.
The centre will support activities along National Waterway‑1, the major inland waterway that stretches from Kolkata to Prayagraj along the Ganges River. With Varanasi located on this important route, authorities are working to develop the city as a key node for inland water transport and trade.
Officials believe that the new training centre will help create skilled manpower for the expanding waterways sector while boosting employment opportunities. At the same time, the project is expected to support trade, logistics, and regional economic activities by strengthening the operational capacity of inland water transport.
The announcement regarding the Regional Centre of Excellence was made by a senior official from the department during the inauguration of a hydrogen-powered vessel service in Kashi. Local authorities have already begun preliminary work related to the project.
