New Delhi, June 17 (APAC Media): Around four lakh families living in Delhi’s slums are expected to benefit from an accelerated rehabilitation and housing initiative after Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the implementation of the Delhi Slum and JJ Cluster Rehabilitation and Relocation Policy, 2026.
During a high-level meeting, Shah directed authorities to expedite the rollout of the policy and asked the Delhi government to notify it at the earliest.
To fast-track the rehabilitation process, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) have been directed to issue tenders for the redevelopment of five JJ clusters within the next 45 days.
Officials have also been asked to prepare project documents and tender forms for an additional 50 JJ clusters.
The Home Minister further instructed the Delhi government to launch at least five public-private partnership (PPP)-based rehabilitation projects every month to speed up the redevelopment of slum settlements across the national capital.
Emphasising the need for better living conditions, Shah said rehabilitation colonies should be equipped with essential community infrastructure, including Anganwadi centres, schools, healthcare facilities and playgrounds.
He also announced that January 1, 2025, will serve as the eligibility cut-off date for beneficiaries under the rehabilitation programme.
According to the government, the initiative is aimed at providing improved housing and civic amenities to families residing in JJ clusters while ensuring access to education, healthcare and other essential services.
The review meeting was attended by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, senior Delhi government ministers, and other top officials from the Centre and the Delhi administration.
