New Delhi, July 25 (APAC Media): IAS Debjani Chakrabarti has received an eight months extension in her foreign deputation tenure as Minister (Economic & Commerce) at the Embassy of India in Tokyo, Japan.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the proposal of the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA).
The extension will take effect after August 28, 2026.
She will now continue in the post until April 28, 2027, or until a new incumbent takes charge, whichever is earlier.
A Key Role in India-Japan Economic Relations
IAS Chakrabarti has been serving in Tokyo since August 2023 at the Joint Secretary level.
As Minister (Economic & Commerce), she works at the intersection of trade, investment and economic diplomacy.
Her role involves engaging with businesses, investors and government stakeholders to strengthen economic ties between India and Japan.
Japan remains one of India’s most important strategic and economic partners.
The two countries are working closely in areas such as infrastructure, manufacturing, technology, clean energy and supply chains.

The extension will provide continuity to several ongoing economic and commercial initiatives between the two countries.
India and Japan are expanding cooperation across multiple sectors. In this context, experienced officers in overseas economic postings play an important role.
They help maintain momentum and facilitate engagement between government agencies, investors and businesses in both countries.

Debjani Chakrabarti is a 2002-batch IAS officer of the Odisha cadre. Over the years, she has held several assignments in both the Odisha government and the Government of India.
She has worked on matters related to economic administration, public finance and policy implementation before taking up her diplomatic-economic assignment in Tokyo.
