ISRO free online course has been announced for school students who are interested to learn about remote sensing and geoinformation science. Any school student above the 8th standard who has a basic understanding of science and mathematics can apply for the course. Scientists and engineers from various centres of the Indian Space Research Organisation will conduct classes for the students who opt for the course.
ISRO free online course is being offered as the organisation feels that remote sensing has become a key technology tool for the collection, storage and analysis of spatially referenced data for resource planning and decision making. Remote sensing is finding its way into more and more classrooms, as satellite images allow students to take a look with their own eyes and gain knowledge by actually seeing what otherwise was taught only theoretically.
What the ISRO Free Online Course on Remote Sensing Technology Will Cover?
The course will cover the basics of remote sensing technology as mandated by the NCERT syllabus. Students will get an understanding of remote sensing definition, its applications, physics behind remote sensing, various terms such as resolution, orbit, and swath as part of the course. Some of the concepts that will be covered are as follows:
- Introduction to remote sensing.
- Stages in remote sensing.
- Electromagnetic radiation (EMR).
- Geostationary and sun synchronous satellites.
- Type of remote sensors.
- Multispectral scanner.
- Resolutions.
- Resolving power of satellites.

- Interpretation of satellite imageries.
- Difference between active and passive sensors.
- Categorization of remotely sensed data products.
- Elements of image interpretation nature of satellite imagery and how it can be used to monitor environmental issues.
ISRO says that to make the course engaging for students, the course will be taught in simple language using images and animations.

Interested students will first have to register on the official website by entering their personal details such as name, email, phone number, and country among others. Participants will then be able to take the course being offered as part of the Antriksh Jigyasa initiative of ISRO. The course is intended to engage secondary and higher secondary students.
