New Delhi: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways recently released the Annual Report on ‘Road Accidents in India-2022.’ According to the report, there has been an 11.9% increase in accidents, a 9.4% rise in fatalities, and a 15.3% increase in injuries compared to the previous year.
There were a total of 4,61,312 reported road accidents in India during 2022, resulting in 1,68,491 fatalities and 4,43,366 injuries.
These figures represent an 11.9% increase in accidents, a 9.4% rise in fatalities, and a 15.3% increase in injuries compared to the previous year.
This report uses data from police departments in various States and Union Territories, which follow standard formats provided by the United Nations for the Asia Pacific Road Accident Data project (UNESCAP) under the Asia Pacific Road Accident Data (APRAD) project.
The report emphasises the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle the contributing factors to these accidents, including speeding, reckless driving, drunken driving, and non-compliance with traffic regulations.
It highlights the importance of strengthening enforcement measures, improving driver education and training programs, and investing in road and vehicle infrastructure.
The Ministry is dedicated to implementing effective measures to reduce road accidents and is addressing various aspects, such as road user behaviour, road infrastructure, vehicle standards, traffic regulation enforcement, and the role of technology in accident prevention.
Recognising that road accidents have multiple causes, the Ministry has devised a multi-pronged strategy that focuses on Education, Engineering (both roads and vehicles), Enforcement, and Emergency Care (the 4Es), with collaboration from both Central and State Governments and various stakeholders.
Additionally, the Ministry is actively involved in initiatives like modern transportation systems, road safety audits, and international partnerships to learn from global best practices.
Initiatives like the Electronic Detailed Accident Report (e-DAR) for real-time data analysis and automated vehicle inspection centres are also being developed to combat road accidents.
The “Road Accidents in India-2022” publication is a valuable resource for policymakers, researchers, and road safety stakeholders. It provides comprehensive insights into various aspects of road accidents, including their causes, locations, and their impact on different categories of road users. The report also addresses emerging trends, challenges, and the Ministry’s road safety initiatives.
