Bengaluru: According to the latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Bengaluru has once again topped the list of cities on cyber crimes among 19 metro cities in India for the year 2022. The city reported a staggering 9,940 cases out of the total 13,534 cases, comprising 73.4% of the cyber crimes registered across the metro cities.
A senior official attributed Bengaluru’s consistent lead in cyber crimes to its high concentration of IT professionals, resulting in increased awareness about cyber laws and better reporting. In comparison, Hyderabad, another IT hub in South India, reported only 282 cyber crime cases.
Bengaluru’s proactive approach to tackling cyber crimes includes five dedicated police stations and the formation of five Special Investigation Teams (SIT), each headed by a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) to investigate specific types of cyber crimes. Despite these measures, the recovery of money lost in cyber crimes remains a challenge, with only a fraction being recovered.
The city’s Police Commissioner has urged local law and order police to assist in registering cyber crime cases, as the city has already surpassed 9,000 cases by November-end this year. Information Technology Minister Priyank Kharge revealed that Karnataka, on average, lost ₹1 crore a day to cyber crimes in 2022, making it the top state in the country for the number of cyber crime cases reported.
In addition to cyber crimes, Bengaluru also leads in the number of cases related to rash and negligent driving and in narcotics crimes, according to the NCRB data.
