New Delhi: Companies are now required to print the ‘date of manufacturing’ and ‘unit sale price’ on all packaged commodities, effective from January 1, Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh announced.
Previously, companies had the option to print either the ‘date of manufacturing,’ ‘date of import,’ or the date of packaging on their products. However, a recent notification from the Consumer Affairs Ministry has now made it mandatory for companies to include only the ‘date of manufacturing’ alongside the ‘unit sale price.’
This regulation aims to provide consumers with essential information about the age of the product, enabling them to make more informed purchase decisions. Simultaneously, the inclusion of the unit sale price facilitates consumers in understanding the cost per unit.
For instance, a 2.5 kg pack of wheat flour will now display the unit sale price per kilogram in addition to the Maximum Retail Price (MRP). Similarly, commodities with a quantity of less than one kilogram will feature a sale price per gram, along with the total MRP of the product.
