New Delhi: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has told e-commerce Food Business Operators (FBOs) to correctly label their products. They noticed that some items licensed under ‘Proprietary Food’ are being marketed as ‘Health Drinks’ or ‘Energy Drinks’. The FSSAI explained that ‘Health Drink’ isn’t defined under the FSS Act 2006 and its related regulations.
To fix the problem, FSSAI told e-commerce FBOs to quickly correct any wrong labels by moving products that aren’t ‘Health Drinks’ or ‘Energy Drinks’ into the right category according to the rules.
The directive said that foods categorised as ‘Proprietary Foods’, which use standard ingredients but aren’t covered by specific rules, shouldn’t be called ‘Health Drinks’ or ‘Energy Drinks’. It also noted that ‘Energy Drinks’ can only be used for products meeting certain criteria set in the Food Product Standards and Food Additives Regulations.
