Chandigarh: The Haryana Education Department has authorised district Deputy Commissioners (DCs) to declare school holidays in response to the ongoing heatwaves. This measure is in effect until May 31.
The letter issued to all DCs said, “You are intimated that the government has decided that the Deputy Commissioner shall assess the weather situation in their respective districts. They in consultation with the respective DEOs/DEEOs may decide closure of schools (government and private) on any particular day/days. These powers will remain with the Deputy Commissioners till 31.05.2024.”
IMD heatwave alert
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) recently reported that heatwaves to severe heatwaves are expected in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Rajasthan. Temperatures can exceed 40 degrees Celsius with no experience of relief for at least a week due to hot winds from Rajasthan. Heatwave conditions are expected in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Gujarat, Saurashtra, and Kutch on May 23, 2024.
Contrasting weather in Southern India
Contrary to northern India’s high temperatures, southern India experienced heavy rainfall. Kanyakumari and other parts of Tamil Nadu saw continuous rain on May 18. Public Works Department’s (PWD) personnel monitored the situation, and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) was kept on standby in case of emergencies.
