New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has approved the continuation and consolidation of three key science and technology programs under a unified scheme named ‘Vigyan Dhara’. The scheme, managed by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), aims to strengthen India’s Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) ecosystem.
The ‘Vigyan Dhara’ scheme merges three existing programs focused on institutional and human capacity building, research and development, and innovation and technology deployment. With an allocated budget of ₹10,579.84 crore for 2021-22 to 2025-26, the scheme is set to enhance efficiency in fund utilization and improve synchronization among various sub-programs. The scheme’s primary objectives include fostering well-equipped R&D labs in academic institutions, promoting research in critical areas such as sustainable energy and water, and enhancing international collaboration. It also emphasizes building a robust human resource pool in science and technology, with targeted efforts to increase women’s participation in these fields.
The ‘Vigyan Dhara’ scheme aligns with the DST’s five-year goals and India’s broader vision of ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’. It will also support the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) in its mission to advance research and development, ensuring that India remains competitive in the global scientific landscape.
