Kanpur: IIT Kanpur is set to host India’s largest Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) testing facility. It is part of a major initiative by the Ministry of Defense (MoD) within the Uttar Pradesh Defense Industrial Corridor. The facility will be accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL).
The project is backed by five Defense Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) including HAL, BEL, and BEML. It will focus on developing advanced testing infrastructure for specialized defense technologies.
The facility, with an estimated cost of Rs. 60 crores, will receive 75% of its funding from the government, with the remaining 25% contributed by stakeholder companies. Featuring state-of-the-art setups for various tests including EMI/EMC, vibration, and environmental testing, IIT Kanpur will provide the necessary infrastructure, including a unique 1 km runway, making it the only academic institution in India with such a facility.
