Kolkata: Following the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital case in Kolkata, a three-judge panel headed by Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India DY Chandrachud appointed a ten-member task force to devise protocols for physician safety at work.
According to Chief Justice Chandrachud, a national task force of physicians from all backgrounds would be established to recommend practices that should be implemented throughout India to ensure that young and middle-aged doctors feel secure in their work environments. One step towards achieving this goal is ensuring a nationwide protocol that guarantees respectable, safe, and effectively enforced working conditions for interns, residents, senior residents, physicians, and other healthcare professionals. The court listed seven crucial actions that must be done to lessen gender-based violence against doctors. These measures encompass the following:
- Provision of safe hospitals
- Enhancement of infrastructure
- Recruitment of social welfare professionals who have received training in crisis and grief counselling
- Organizing workshops that concentrate on effective crisis and grief management
The CJI said, “We are assembling a list of members as part of the National Taskforce, a national consensus must be evolved.” The National Task Force (NTF) should look into ways to address and prevent violence, including gender-based violence against medical workers, the Supreme Court stressed.
